Join the Milo Staff! If you have a philosophical attitude about poop...

If you have ever wanted a meaningful job working with animals that did not involve dealing with the heartbreak of euthanasia but rather rescuing animals from that fate...

The Milo Foundation is seeking people to join the animal care team up at the sanctuary. The setting is rural, (remote, removed, rustic)in the hills east of Willits, north of Ukiah.

We are looking for people who love animals, who are committed to their welfare, who enjoy working outside and are willing to get dirty. The dogs are exuberant and mostly untrained (but grateful!), the work is physically demanding, very hands-on and sometimes stressful, often rewarding. The cats are many, and varied, tame and feral. They have their own "Cat-House" and all the great outdoors... Training is provided.

Milo Welcome Sign You will be part of a team but will frequently work independently feeding and exercising dogs, cleaning yards and concrete areas, managing groups of dogs, and sometimes grooming and bathing or other animal related activities. You may also be trained to administer medications and keep records if you show interest and aptitude. And, there are mobile adoptions in the San Francisco Bay Area, after a time, if desired, and you are good with the public, this could become part of your helping the animals as well – finding them homes! (over 21 years of age, a valid CDL and good driving record is required.)

You must love dogs, and/or cats, be reliable, compassionate, patient, able to follow instructions and to work independently. The wage includes room, though you may choose to live in town. If you choose to live in town, you must have reliable transportation. For anyone considering relocation, a one-month trial commitment is requested for everyone's benefit.

CURRENT JOBS AVAILABLE INCLUDE:

SANCTUARY MANAGEMENT & CARETAKING.  This is a position for a couple ideally.  The main house at the sanctuary would be your living quarters.

The sanctuary needs people capable of handling a variety of issues with both animals and people.  One person needs to have computer skills, management skills etc. and another (or same) needs to have a basic understanding of medical care for cats and dogs - a veterinary technician would be ideal - or someone with a lot of hands on experience in rescue and treatment of animals from animal shelters, disease control and medications - vaccinations, testing etc.

Visiting the Milo Sanctuary in Willits has a dual purpose: on one hand it is important that you understand the true nature of the job that you are applying for, on the other hand it is important for Milo to make sure that you have the necessary skills to complete the tasks that would be assigned to you in the event that you are hired for this resident/care taker position.

In fact, becoming full time rescuers/caretakers is more of a lifestyle choice than a job in the traditional sense.  It can be very intense and energy consuming, yet it is also very rewarding in a way that goes far beyond monetary value.

Here is some useful information that will help make your stay at Milo more pleasant and rewarding:

-You will want to schedule a full week for this experience.

-Clothing: bring comfortable clothing that you are not too attached to.  We recommend long pants and long sleeves and for some, a pair of work gloves.  A hat in the summer and rain gear in the winter are also a good idea.

-Provisions.  The nearest store is in town and about 12 miles away (a half hour drive one way.)  Make sure that you have enough food for your stay.  Refrigeration and cooking facilities are available to you.  Spring water is plentyful and safe to drink.  A water canteen is recommended in the summer months.

-Please arrive at Milo no later than 6:00 pm on the day prior to your visit/interview so that we can show you around and check you in prior to closing down for the night.  The average drive from the Bay Area takes at least 3 hours, and many get lost along the way, so leaving in plenty of time is advised.  Make sure that you have detailed directions (which we can email or fax - do NOT trust Mapquest or Yahoo Maps) and don't hesitate to call if in doubt on how to find us - however, know that cell phones are not dependable in certain areas around and at the sanctuary.)  Quiet hours are from 10pm to 7:00am.

-On your scheduled work/interview day: be ready to go at 7.30am.  You will witness the opening of the House and Main Yards, feeding, watering, scooping, dog walking and you will be involved in all the daily caretaking tasks.  You will experience first hands what a full day of doggie/cat care involves.

Bring plenty of energy, both mentally and physically.

We hope that you will love this lifestyle as much as we do.  Once again, thanks for your interest in helping our extended family.

The critters at Milo greatly appreciate it!
