Featured Critter: FONZY

Breed: Great Dane - Border Collie Mix  -  Gender: Male  -  Age: 3 yrs. 8 mo. (est)  -  Milo ID: 23612

FONZY *Foster Update* 11/9/16 "Fonzy Bear is a beautiful, very sweet and loving dog with lots of energy. He has great house manners, is potty trained, can be left alone for several hours when he is with his foster sister. He hates and doesn’t need a crate. He would love to be the second dog in his new home.

Since he wasn’t properly socialized in his previous home he initially is suspicious of new people but as soon as he realizes that visitors are no threat he loves having people around in the house. He is kid friendly but due to his size and strength children should be 12 or older. He is a goof ball and has no idea how big he is. He is good at playing fetch, knows all the basic commands and is very affectionate.

City life scares him and therefore a more rural home with lots of space to roam would benefit him greatly. He loves to run (he might be part race horse) and needs lot of exercise. Fonzy Bear is very excitable and we are still working on loose leash walking. He is doing well on a 12 foot leash on our nature hikes but still pulls on a shorter leash. He is not dog aggressive but is reactive on leash, still pulls and barks when he sees other dogs. It’s just too exciting! But after a proper introduction he is doing very well with all the dogs on our group walks and enjoys running and playing with his friends. And boy, he can run! He still needs to learn how to greet dogs in an appropriate way. Right now he still wants to run up to them like the line backer of a football team, body slam included. That can get him into trouble since most dogs don’t share his enthusiasm.

His recall is great and he has no prey drive. When Fonzy Bear is relaxed he is a fast learner, but his excitement often gets in the way. Fonzy Bear is looking for a family that can help him to relax and trust, that can give him the exercise he needs and has the patience to teach him in a calm and loving way that the world is a safe place and slowing down a good thing."

Fonzy is a very sweet dog, who was adopted from us when he was a puppy. Sadly the family who owned him moved and could not take him with them.

Fonzy needs a lot of activity and space! He is athletic and eager to play, to run and to have adventures! He needs activity and exercise and a relatively dog savvy home to excel. Confinement and frustration at going from a house to a kennel is really not beneficial to him...we hope to find him a great home soon!

*Owner surrender notes* 6/10/16 "He has mellowed out with the second dog in the home after we put him in formal training. We have him successfully crate and potty trained. He knows all the basic commands and is obedient at home. He loves rope toys, belly rubs and cuddling. We had two small children he was very sweet with. Overall he is a pretty hard headed guy."
