Reya and Her Rescue Puppies

 In Happy Tails!

Today and every day far too many dogs are being abandoned in desolate fields and orchards in the Central Valley and elsewhere in California. Both urban and rural areas are seeing terrible increases in dogs running wild and scared – as well as found dead in the roads after being hit by cars.

Here is one example of a pregnant dog abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Mama dug a long hole where she gave birth and kept her puppies hidden away.

Fortunately, good people found them and took them in as fosters, then Milo was asked to take the family. We were fortunate to find an available foster home for them!

These are some of the lucky ones, others still roam and starve and get killed by coyotes and hit by cars…. It’s a horrible situation and we humans are failing so many. Our animal care system is terribly broken. Shelters turn away strays, and that used to be where strays were meant to go so they were safe and owners could come find their lost pets. Now the assumption is the animal was dumped, is homeless and unwanted. Contra Costa County for instance does not even accept stray/found cats, people are told to leave them where they were found.

There truly are not enough homes for them all, but that is not an acceptable reason to turn our backs and close the doors on them. Yes, euthanasia becomes an increasing necessary evil, but starvation, being hit by cars, or mangled by packs of dogs or coyotes is not a solution to overpopulation. Backyard breeding and puppy mills all need to be shut down and spay/neutering be required.

Spaying and neutering is certainly the long-term solution, but abandonment has got to stop! These lucky pups will make some families very happy, and their clever and sensitive mom Reya deserves the best home as well! For adoption inquiries please watch for the pups to appear on our website!
